We are
getting ready to treat our 9-year-old Appalachian Structures Log Home. We
used Clear Weatherseal on the initial application and on a follow-up a few
years later. Is this still available in Clear? We have a couple of unsealed
5 gallon pails from 5-6 years ago that look to be OK; is there a shelf life
problem with this? As we have white chinking, we are apprehensive about
using a pre-stained product.

Dear David,
Continental
does make WS in clear because is a requested item from ALS. We do not recommend
clear because it simply does not provide the protection and longevity of
our other stain colors, (no clear coating does, no matter what other companies'
claim). The age of WS can be determined by looking at the black stenciled
numbers on the lid of the container. The batch number is the 2nd set of
numbers below the product code number. In this case, the product code number
for clear is 82-0142. The batch code number beneath will start with a letter
followed by 2 sets of numbers separated by a dash or slash symbol. The last
number of the batch code indicates the year it was made. If it were 5 or
6 that would mean 1995 or 1996, etc. The product may be fine. Check to see
if any skin has formed on the top of the liquid. Often a liquid float may
be 1/4" or so above the skin so make sure to poke into the liquid to determine
if a skin has formed beneath. If a skin is present, cut around the edge
of the skin and peel it off and dispose of it. Then mix with a drill mixer.
Either scenario, mix thoroughly with a drill mixer till it is thick, pudding
like and creamy. It will take 10 minutes or so of good mixing. If it blends
together and is homogenous then it is still stable and usable. The only
other issue would be length of dry. It may take longer for WS to dry. You
should be aware of that. Call me if you are still in need of clarification
on any of these matters discussed.
