We are building a WI Log Home and will be getting WeatherSeal stain
with the home package. I'd like to get some advice on application. Specific
questions that I have include: 1) Is it best to stain after the log siding
is put on the house or before? I was initially thinking that I could start
staining as soon as the materials arrived so they don't have time to discolor
and it may be easier to stain with the log siding on saw horses rather than
on the house. 2) Would I get a more even stain appearance if I use a rag
for staining or is a brush better? 3) If we need to caulk (e.g. around windows,
etc.) should we caulk before staining or after or doesn't it matter if the
caulk matches the stain color?
Thanks for your assistance.

Koreen,
1.There are a couple of issues
to consider when pre staining. Touch up that will be needed as a result
of nicks that naturally occur as the siding is installed. The amount of
moisture contained within the siding. Generally it is a good idea to have
the siding air dry and lose some of its excess moisture before staining.
2. For best results, application with a synthetic bristle stain brush is
recommended. Wiping strains are generally used for interior application
on furniture, wood trim, etc.
3. Caulk 1st. Allow the caulk to hard cure.
Then stain over. That way the caulk line will not be as noticeable. Use
a neutral color caulk such as tan or wood tone.
